If your titles need to read differently on Etsy and Shopify, Shuttle can adjust them each time it transfers or updates a product. The options are different for each direction, so Etsy → Shopify and Shopify → Etsy each have their own settings.
Where to find the product title settings
The Product Title settings are in Shuttle's settings, with a separate set for each direction.
In Shuttle, open Settings.
Under Products, choose Etsy → Shopify or Shopify → Etsy.
Go to the Product Title section.
Make your changes and save.
Shorten and clean up titles from Etsy to Shopify
The Etsy → Shopify title settings change the Shopify title that Shuttle creates from your Etsy title. They apply to new transfers and to updates that include the title.
Shuttle applies these settings in a fixed order: Truncate from, then find & replace, then shortening by separator.
Cut the title off with Truncate from
Truncate from removes the text you enter, and everything after it, from the title.
For example, with Truncate from set to "|", the Etsy title "Leather Belt for Men | Handmade | Made in Italy" becomes "Leather Belt for Men".
Keep the first parts of a title with Title separator and Slice after
Title separator and Slice after let you keep only the first parts of a long title.
In Title separator, enter the character that splits your titles into parts, for example "|". To list more than one, separate them with commas, such as |,/,-.
In Slice after, choose how many parts to keep. For example, After 2 separators keeps the first two parts.
For example, with the separator "|" and After 2 separators, "Red Dress | Summer Fashion | Vintage Style | Cotton" becomes "Red Dress | Summer Fashion".
A few things to know about title separators:
Shuttle only splits the title where the separator is followed by a space, as in "Red Dress | Summer Fashion".
If you list several separators, Shuttle uses the first one in your list that appears in the title.
Don't slice turns shortening by separator off.
Check the result in the title preview
The title preview shows you the result before you save. Type a title in the preview field to see the effect of Truncate from and the separator settings.
The title preview does not include your find & replace rules. The title preview also only works with one separator, so if you list several, test your settings on one product first.
Replace or remove words in Etsy titles
Find & replace rules swap or remove words in your titles. Select Add find & replace, enter the text to look for in Find in title and the new text in Replace with. You can add as many rules as you need.
Replace: find "T-Shirt" and replace it with "Tee". "Men's Cotton T-Shirt" becomes "Men's Cotton Tee".
Remove: find "Wholesale" and leave Replace with empty. "Vintage Vase Wholesale" becomes "Vintage Vase".
Capital letters work differently for replacing and removing. When you replace text, Find in title must match the title exactly, including capital letters. When you remove text, Shuttle removes it with or without capital letters.
Set the Shopify handle and SEO title
The handle is the last part of the product's web address in Shopify. For a new product, Shuttle always builds the handle from the adjusted title.
Update handle when the title changes: when you update a product and its adjusted title is different from the current Shopify title, Shuttle gives the product a new handle to match. Old product links redirect to the new address.
Trim handles to 50 characters (on by default): Shuttle shortens the title part of the handle, cutting at a whole word, and adds the last five digits of the Etsy listing ID to the end. For example: leather-wallet-12345. When this is off, the handle is the full title.
Include SKU in handle: Shuttle adds the product's SKU to the end of the handle instead of the listing digits. For example: leather-wallet-lw123. If the product has several SKUs, Shuttle uses the first one. This only works when Trim handles to 50 characters is on.
Use Etsy title as Shopify SEO title: Shuttle sets the Shopify SEO title to the original Etsy title, before any of the title changes. This only happens when you update products with every field selected: Overwrite all fields in a bulk update, or Select all fields when you update a single product. New transfers do not get this SEO title.
Add to or change titles from Shopify to Etsy
The Shopify → Etsy title settings change the Etsy title that Shuttle creates from your Shopify title, on transfers and updates. Shortening by separator is not available in this direction.
Add text before or after every Etsy title
Prepend to title and Append to title add text before or after every title. If the result would be longer than Etsy's 140-character limit, Shuttle leaves this text off.
Take the Etsy title from a Shopify metafield
Shopify metafield key for title and Metafield action take title text from a Shopify metafield. The Metafield action decides what Shuttle does with that text:
Replace the product title uses the metafield as the whole Etsy title, and your other title settings are skipped.
Prepend to the product title adds the metafield text before the title.
Append to the product title adds the metafield text after the title.
Products with no value in that metafield keep their Shopify title.
Replace or remove words in Shopify titles
Find & replace for Shopify → Etsy works on the Shopify title, the same way it works for Etsy → Shopify. Select Add find & replace, enter the text to look for in Find in title and the new text in Replace with. Leave Replace with empty to remove the text.
Does Shuttle change titles to meet Etsy's rules?
Shuttle also tidies titles from Shopify so they meet Etsy's title rules.
Before you run a big transfer with new title settings
Test your title settings on one or two real products before you run a big transfer.
Using the same separators in all your Etsy titles also helps, because title shortening then works the same way on every product.
