Ensuring Accurate Product Dimensions & Weights During Transfers

Etsy uses a product's weight and dimensions to work out calculated shipping, so getting them right keeps your shipping costs accurate. Shuttle can send a weight and dimensions with the products you transfer or update from Shopify to Etsy.

Where Shuttle gets each product's weight

Shuttle uses the first weight it finds for each product, in this order:

  1. The weight of the product's first variant in Shopify.

  2. Your Weight metafield, if you named one.

  3. Your Default weight.

Shuttle converts the Shopify weight for you when the Weight unit you pick in Shuttle differs from the one in Shopify. Metafield values and your Default weight are not converted, so Shuttle reads them in the Weight unit you chose.

Where Shuttle gets each product's dimensions

Shuttle takes length, width and height from these sources, in this order:

  1. Your Length, Width and Height metafields, if you named them. Shuttle checks the product first, then its first variant.

  2. Your Default length, Default width and Default height.

Shuttle reads these numbers in the Dimensions unit you chose. If you leave the Dimensions unit on Match weight unit, Shuttle uses centimeters when your weight is in grams or kilograms, and inches otherwise.

When Shuttle sends weight and dimensions to Etsy

Whether Shuttle sends weight and dimensions depends on the product's shipping profile:

  • Products on a calculated shipping profile always get a weight and dimensions, because Etsy needs them. If Shuttle finds no value, it sends 5 in your selected unit, so set your own defaults to avoid this.

  • Products on any other shipping profile get only the values Shuttle finds. Missing values are left off.

When you update products, Shuttle changes the weight and dimensions on Etsy only when Dim & Weight is one of the fields you choose to update. If you do not see Dim & Weight in the list, it may be turned off in your Master Switch.

Set a default weight and dimensions

Defaults give Shuttle a weight and dimensions to send when a product has none of its own.

  1. In Shuttle, go to Settings > Products > Shopify → Etsy and find the Dimensions & Weight card.

  2. Leave Weight handling on Send weight data as usual (no changes).

  3. Under Weight, choose a Weight unit and enter a Default weight. Shuttle uses it when the Shopify product has no weight.

  4. Under Dimensions, choose a Dimensions unit and enter a Default length, Default width and Default height.

  5. Click Save.

Each default must be a number greater than 0. Leave a field empty if you do not want a default for it.

Use Shopify metafields for weight and dimensions

Shopify metafields let each product carry its own dimensions, or a weight that is not set on the variant in Shopify.

  1. In Shuttle, go to Settings > Products > General and find the Shopify metafields card.

  2. Next to Weight, Length, Height and Width, enter the metafield's name or key, exactly as it is in Shopify.

  3. Click Save.

  4. In Shopify, fill in those metafields on your products. Use plain numbers in the units you chose on the Dimensions & Weight card.

Shuttle supports these metafield types:

  • Single line text

  • Multi-line text

  • Single line text (List)

If Etsy listings fail to save because of weight

Some regions do not support calculated shipping on Etsy, so a listing with weight data can fail to save there. To fix this, set Weight handling to Remove weight data to fix Etsy save errors and click Save.

With Remove weight data to fix Etsy save errors selected, Shuttle stops sending weight and dimensions for products that are not on a calculated shipping profile. When you update a product with Dim & Weight selected, Shuttle also clears the weight already on the Etsy listing.

You can ignore this setting if your listings save without errors.

Avoid wrong shipping costs on Etsy

A wrong unit or a wrong Shopify weight gives Etsy the wrong weight, which leads to wrong shipping costs or failed transfers. Two checks help:

  • Make sure the Weight unit and Dimensions unit match the numbers you entered.

  • Keep the weight of each product's first variant correct in Shopify. That weight always comes before your metafield and your Default weight.
