When you transfer or update products from Etsy to Shopify, you may not want every Etsy variation on Shopify. Shuttle lets you leave variations out in three ways: by variation type, by variation name, or by whether they are hidden on Etsy.
All three settings are in Settings > Products > Etsy → Shopify, in the Product Variations section. They only show when Include variations is turned on. Click Save after you change them.
Leave out a whole variation type
Exclude variation types removes a whole variation type, such as Size, from your products on Shopify. It is in Settings > Products > Etsy → Shopify, in the Product Variations section.
For example, say you sell T-shirts on Etsy with two variation types: Color (Blue, Green, Red) and Size (Small, Medium, Large). To stop offering sizes on Shopify:
Find Exclude variation types.
In Variation types to exclude, enter the variation type name as it appears on Etsy. In this case, that is Size.
Click Save.
To exclude more than one type, separate the names with a pipe character (|), for example Pattern|Size.
A few things to know about Exclude variation types:
Capital letters don't matter, but the spelling must match the Etsy name.
The setting only affects products with two variation types. A product with only one type keeps it.
Each product loses one type at most. If a product has two types from your list, Shuttle removes the one that comes first on the listing.
Once a type is removed, Shopify gets one variant for each remaining value, so in the T-shirt example you get one variant per color. Each variant takes its price, quantity and SKU from the first matching combination on Etsy.
Leave out specific variation values
Exclude variations by name removes specific variation values but keeps the rest of the type. It is in Settings > Products > Etsy → Shopify, in the Product Variations section.
For example, your T-shirts come in:
Color: Blue, Green, Red
Size: Small, Medium, Large, Extra Large
To leave out the red T-shirts and the larger sizes:
Find Exclude variations by name.
Type Red and click Add.
Type Large* and click Add.
Click Save.
Each name you add shows as a tag below the field. To remove a name, click its tag.
With these names, Shuttle transfers every variation except those that are Red, Large or Extra Large. A variation is left out if any of its values match, so Red removes red T-shirts in every size.
A few things to know about Exclude variations by name:
Without an asterisk (*), the name must match the whole Etsy value. Capital letters don't matter.
With an asterisk, Shuttle removes every variation whose value contains the text. Large* removes Large and Extra Large, and also any other value with "large" in it, such as X-Large.
Each name can be up to 30 characters and cannot contain $, ^ or a backtick.
Leave out variations hidden on Etsy
Only export visible variations keeps the variations you have hidden on Etsy out of transfers and updates. It is in Settings > Products > Etsy → Shopify, in the Product Variations section. Etsy lets you hide a variation from buyers, but by default Shuttle still transfers hidden variations.
For example, your T-shirt has three visible colors (Blue, Green and Red) and one hidden color, Limited Edition Yellow. With Only export visible variations turned on, Shuttle transfers only Blue, Green and Red.
You can also keep hidden variations on Shopify but stop them selling. To do that, leave Only export visible variations off and turn on Set hidden variations to zero stock. Shuttle then adds hidden variations to Shopify as sold out.
When is it worth excluding variations?
Excluding variations from Etsy to Shopify transfers helps in a few common situations:
Some variations are not right for your Shopify store.
A listing has more combinations than Shopify allows. Removing a type or some values can bring it under the limit.
You want to leave out variations you no longer offer.
Exclude variations by SKU or by full combination
To leave out variations by SKU, or by a full combination such as Medium and Blue, use the Exclude variations settings on the General page. The settings in the Product Variations section do not do this.
