Keeping Shopify product state in step with Etsy

When you deactivate a listing on Etsy, you usually want the matching product to stop showing in your Shopify store as well. The Sync product state setting handles this for you. Shuttle moves the matched Shopify product to draft when its Etsy listing is deactivated, and sets it back to active once the listing is active again.

How Sync product state works

Sync product state watches your Etsy listings and changes the status of their matched Shopify products, so you don't have to update both shops by hand.

  • When an Etsy listing is deactivated, Shuttle sets the matched Shopify product to draft, as long as the Shopify product is active at that moment.

  • When the Etsy listing is active again, Shuttle sets the Shopify product back to active the next time it syncs a stock change from that listing, for example after a sale or a quantity edit on Etsy.

Sync product state only changes products that are matched between your two shops.

Turn Sync product state on or off

Sync product state is on by default. It belongs to syncing from Etsy to Shopify, so it only works while that direction is turned on.

  1. In Shuttle, go to Settings > Stock Syncer > Etsy → Shopify.

  2. Tick Enable syncing from Etsy to Shopify. Once that is on, the Product state section appears.

  3. In Product state, tick Sync product state to turn it on, or untick it to turn it off.

  4. Click Save.

Syncing from Etsy to Shopify is part of the Stock Syncer. To use it, you need the Growth plan or higher.

If you are not on one of those plans, you can try the Stock Syncer free for 14 days with the Start free trial button in Settings > Stock Syncer. The Stock Syncer trial is separate from Shuttle's free trial: Shuttle's free trial does not include stock syncing, so you start the Stock Syncer trial yourself, and it runs for its own 14 days. Each shop can start it once.

When does Sync product state leave a Shopify product as it is?

Sync product state does not change a Shopify product's status in these cases:

  • The Shopify product is archived. Shuttle only moves products between active and draft.

  • The Shopify product is already in draft when the Etsy listing is deactivated.

  • The listing was deactivated a while ago. Shuttle picks up a deactivation soon after it happens, so a listing that was deactivated before syncing from Etsy to Shopify was turned on is left as it is.

  • Your stock syncing tag rules leave the product out.

  • The listing was reactivated on Etsy, but its stock has not changed since. In that case the Shopify product stays in draft until Shuttle syncs a stock change from that listing, or until you set it to active in Shopify yourself.

Why did a Shopify product I put in draft become active again?

With Sync product state on, a Shopify product that is in draft while its Etsy listing is active gets set to active the next time Shuttle syncs a stock change from that listing. This happens even if you put the product in draft yourself.

To keep a product in draft while its Etsy listing stays active, you can do either of these:

  • Turn off Sync product state.

  • Leave the product out of stock syncing with a tag rule.

Sync product state and sold-out Etsy listings

A listing that sells out on Etsy is not the same as a deactivated listing, so Sync product state does not handle it. To choose what happens to the Shopify product when an item sells out, use the When a product is sold out on Etsy setting. It is in the same Product state section.

Sync product state on the Shopify → Etsy page

The Settings > Stock Syncer > Shopify → Etsy page has its own Sync product state setting, which works the other way round. When a Shopify product is set to draft or archived, Shuttle deactivates the matched Etsy listing. When the Shopify product is active and in stock again, Shuttle reactivates the listing on Etsy.

This setting is also on by default. It appears in the Product state section once Enable syncing from Shopify to Etsy is ticked.
