Update Product Variations with "Recreate Inventory"

Add new variations? Shuttle’s Recreate Inventory keeps everything aligned

When you add or remove variations on a product in Etsy or Shopify, you usually want the same change on your other sales channel. A regular update is built to update the variations the two products already share, so it does not reliably add new variations or remove old ones.

Recreating the inventory brings the new set of variations across. Shuttle deletes the product's inventory on the other platform and rebuilds it from the product you are updating from, so the variations, prices, quantities and SKUs match exactly.

How do I recreate a product's inventory?

You recreate a product's inventory from the Products page, as part of an update:

  1. In Shuttle, open the Products page.

  2. Pick the tab for the direction you need:

    • Etsy → Shopify to copy your Etsy variations to Shopify.

    • Shopify → Etsy to copy your Shopify variations to Etsy.

  3. Find the product and click Update in Shopify or Update in Etsy. If you are on the All Products tab, click Update and choose the direction instead.

  4. Under Advanced, tick Recreate Shopify inventory or Recreate Etsy inventory. Shuttle also ticks SKU, Price and Quantity for you, because it needs them to rebuild the inventory.

  5. Click Update Shopify product or Update Etsy product.

When the update finishes, the product on the other platform has the same variations as the product you updated from.

Which products can have their inventory recreated?

You can only recreate inventory for a product that is matched, because the update button appears only when the product exists on both platforms. If you see Transfer to Shopify or Transfer to Etsy instead, the product is not matched yet.

What happens to the inventory on the other platform?

Recreating inventory replaces the whole inventory on the other platform. Every variation, price, quantity and SKU there is overwritten, so make sure this is what you want before you start.

The direction you choose when you recreate inventory decides which product is kept. The platform you update from stays as it is, and the other platform's inventory is replaced.

Does Etsy's 400-variant limit apply when recreating inventory?

Etsy's 400-variant limit applies when you recreate Etsy inventory. A Shopify product with more than 400 variants is not sent.
